Key West
Activities
The Florida Keys are teeming with activities and things to do for visitors of all ages and interests. Your time in the Keys can be as action-packed and thrilling or relaxed and low-key as you desire. You control the pace of your vacation. Adventure-seekers can test the water, and their skills, on a fishing charter for prized game fish. Get up close and personal with tropical fish on a snorkel trip, or dive to explore a ship wreck on the ocean floor. Visit local art galleries and museums and shop for unique gifts. Feast on fresh seafood at fine restaurants and hang with the locals, or just hang on a hammock suspended between two palms. Simply unwind and let go with the outgoing tide. You will be, after all, on island time.Transportation
The 120-mile-long Florida Keys island chain is linked to mainland Florida by U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway. Visitors can fly into Miami International Airport (MIA) or Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and from there can reach the Keys by airport shuttle buses or rental cars. Travelers can reach Key Largo, the gateway to the Keys, in about an hour from Miami or an hour and 45 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale.Food & Drink
Seafood rules in the Keys, which is full of chef-owned restaurants with not-too-fancy food. Many restaurants serve cuisine that reflects the proximity of the Bahamas and Caribbean (you’ll see the term "Floribbean" on many menus). Tropical fruits figure prominently—especially on the beverage side of the menu. Florida spiny lobster should be local and fresh from August to March, and stone crabs from mid-October to mid-May. And don't dare leave the islands without sampling conch, be it in a fritter or in ceviche. Keep an eye out for authentic key lime pie—yellow custard in a graham-cracker crust. If it's green, just say "no." Note: Particularly in Key West and particularly during spring break, the more affordable and casual restaurants can get loud and downright rowdy, with young visitors often more interested in drinking than eating. Live music contributes to the decibel levels. If you're more of the quiet, intimate-dining type, avoid such overly exuberant scenes by eating early or choosing a restaurant where the bar isn’t the main focus.Unfortunately there are no self-catering offers at this location at the moment.
