Additional information
It started as a log cabin in 1868. Town “developer” David Mercer, after whom a nearby creek was named, built it and ran a frontier store and post office; a few years later, a stone room was added.
Both the log cabin and stone room were preserved when, in the late 1880s, a two-story addition was created.
After having stood empty for more than 40 years, the Frontier Store House was beautifully restored and renewed, and became a comfortable very well insulated family retreat and guest house.
Only steps away from the tallgrass prairie and open range cattle country, this home away from home is perfect for long weekends and vacations.
Ready for a Flint Hills adventure? The tallgrass prairie surrounding Matfield Green is a national treasure worth discovering.
Just north of the little town you will find Pioneer Bluffs historic ranch and The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs.
The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 20 miles north in Strong City.
Cottonwood Falls is also worth your visit; check out the historic courthouse and don't forget to climb the stairs to the old jail.
West of Cottonwood Falls you'll find Chase State Fishing Lake.
A wonderful daytrip is a visit to the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, KS.
Lots of informative displays and educational exhibits and a great short film about the Flint Hills will keep you captive. Just follow # 177 north.
You'll find restaurants and groceries in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls as well as in El Dorado and Emporia.
